About Bromsgrove

Bromsgrove has a reputation that goes back over 500 years. As one of the UK’s top boarding schools we welcome pupils from over 50 different nationalities and we have extensive experience in the needs of young people living away from home. We are proud to be able to offer our summer visitors a true taste of what a traditional boarding school has to offer, as well as let them take advantage of our fantastic location to enjoy the very best of what England offers – from scenic walks on the Malvern Hills to thrilling rides at the many adventure parks within easy reach of us.

Bromsgrove is one of the top ten day and boarding schools in the UK, we excel at sports; our sports facilities are extensive and, like our 100 acres of grounds, are well maintained. Another area of strength is Music and Drama and many of our Summer School activities take advantage of our superb theatre and music performance spaces. Our boarding houses are modern and comfortable, with plenty of spaces for youngsters to spend time together.

Bromsgrove School’s Summer School has been running for over 10 years. In that time we are proud to have built an experience for our summer visitors which is both fulfilling and rewarding. This year we are offering a wide range of courses:

  • Intensive English Language Course combined with STEM subjects, Performing Arts or Multi Activities
  • Advanced English Course combined with STEM subjects, Performing Arts or Multi Activities
  • University Application Preparation Course

All programmes include time out of the classroom for fun activities and for full or half day excursions.

Courses, depending on ability, are for children aged 8 to 11 and 12 to 15.

The Courses in Detail

Summer School class sizes at Bromsgrove are kept small which means all students can benefit from our specialist teaching. Where students take part in group project work, classes may be slightly larger – these sessions give the groups an opportunity to present their work to other students at the end of the project.

Intensive English Language Programme
Juniors (8 – 11 years) and Seniors (12-15 years)
The course is aimed at those whose level of English is beginner or intermediate.
Students take a placement test and questionnaire on arrival so that they can be placed in the best class for their needs, dependent on age and English ability. The ages, number and ability of students change week to week, and we adapt class levels to ensure they match students’ needs.

Half the day is spent in intensive English lessons, taught by specialist teachers from International House, Bristol. The English lessons will develop practical language skills in an English speaking environment, speaking and writing skills using a topic-based approach and oral communication skills though debates and presentations. Each student will receive 20 hours of English tutoring a week.

At the end of the two week course pupils will have
  • Strengthened their grammar
  • Developed confidence and accuracy in speaking
  • Improved their writing skills
  • Improved their reading ability
  • Increased their listening skills
The other half of the day is spent in one of the supplementeary programmes or going on external trips. All participants take part in the Multi-Activity Programme or you may choose to take part in Stem Subjects or Performing Arts instead.

Advanced English Course
For those students who already have a good level of spoken and written English we offer an advanced English course which will build on existing skills and also offers sessions in debating, public speaking, creative writing, magazine writing, report writing and presentations. The course is taught by specialist teachers from International House, Bristol

Both the Intensive English and Advanced English can be combined with Multi Activities, STEM course or the Performing Arts course.

MULTI ACTIVITIES Course Juniors (8 – 11) and Seniors (12-15)
Half of the day is spent in activities or going on external trips. Each day is full of a massive range of fun activities including creative arts and technology, dance, fitness, football, tennis cookery, team games and just about anything else we can think of!

PERFORMING ARTS Course Juniors (8 – 11) and Seniors (12-15)
Fancy developing your singing, music composition, dance and drama skills? This course is aimed at anyone from beginner to those with some previous knowledge and experience.
Drama workshops will get you working on your communication and get you to be creative, using your imagination to put on small performances and showcasing your skills.
Learn how to use your voice and sing with others in a brand new choir.
Work with a composer to create your own music.
Learn how to express yourself in Dance workshops.

STEM Course Juniors (8 – 11) and Seniors (12-15)
STEM Summer Course immerses students in the English language combined with a variety of fun, educational and practical workshops, introducing the STEM subject areas with the aim of stimulating their interest and fostering a life-long interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The course covers some very exciting subjects as well as some planned off site visits and time spent in our Observatory star gazing.

University Preparation Course for 13 – 16 year olds
This is a stand-alone course. The course is for pupils who want to get a head-start on university applications for both the UK and world universities. The exciting programme offers the opportunity to visit some of the top UK universities.
